Artificial Glow
Artificial Glow is a contrived self portrait meant to display fluorescence. The image was taken on April 11, 2022 and consists of a picture of my face with various colors of fluorescent eyeliner applied onto my face to make a pattern. I then used a UV flashlight, which I diffused by shining in a mirror so that the light dispersed more evenly on my face; this caused the eyeliner to glow. The water-activated liner works through the absorption and re-admission of radiation. The UV light hits the liner and the pigment absorbs some of the energy from the UV light. This absorbed radiation is emitted in a lower energy level, and longer wavelength, that is on the visible light spectrum; this is why the eyeliner glows. As seen in the picture, my hair and earring are also glowing. Both are again due to fluorescence. Both the pigment in the hair dye and the earring have the ability to fluoresce which is why they are glowing.
